Union Public Service Commission (UPSC):
During the pre-independence period, there was a demand from the political circles then to Indianize the Civil Services. The British responded by setting up a Public Service Commission in the year 1926, for recruitment to Jobs in India. Since the people were not satisfied with its functioning, the British set up a Federal Public Service Commission during the year 1935. After India became a Republic in the year 1950, the Federal Public Service Commission became an autonomous body and was rechristened as Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It was accorded constitutional status and has been established under the Article 315 of the Constitution of India. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has a Chairman and 10 members. Its main functions among many others include recruitment to services and posts in Central government by conducting competitive exams and interviews. It also acts as an advisory body on suitability of Indian government officers for appointment on promotion.
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts about a dozen exams in a year on an all India basis. Find below the details and tentative schedule of the exams for the year 2009:

1. The dates of notification and commencement of the examinations and the conditions of eligibility indicated above are liable to alteration, if the circumstances so warrant.
2. Commission’s advertisements containing details of the various examinations are published in Employment News/Rozgar Samachar and leading daily newspapers of the Country, generally in their Saturday editions.

3. Except for the Defence Services Examinations at Serial Numbers 2,3,8 and 9, the upper age limits are relaxable in the case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes and certain other categories as notified by the Government from time to time.
4. Female candidates are not eligible for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination.
